Newsletter no. 1 2014 from KMCH Support Group
Hello, Tashi Delek and Namaste
Annual meeting in KMCH Support Group
As in previous years, the annual meeting will be held in Ekebyhovs Slott (Castle) on Ekerö. The annual meeting will be held on Sunday 30 March at. 3 pm. Notice of the annual meeting will be sent separately.
News from Humla
The children have winter break and are like their teachers in the homes of their relatives and friends. Chembals brother and his family live at the hostel and has not move down to the village and their ordinary houses there. The school house is only about 20 minutes ' walk and an altitude of 80 meters higher than the village so it is not so easy to walk up and down. The reason however is mainly that they dare not leave school home without coverage. Even in the most remote areas, they must guard against thefts.
The other day we got a message that Chembals brother must go to Kathmandu to be treated in hospital. The nurse at the KMCH-clinic could not treat him so he was recommended to go to a hospital in Kathmandu. We can only hope that there is nothing serious and that he soon will be back in Yangar.
We are waiting for new photos and more details from Humla but first someone must go from Yangar to Simikot send the information to the United States, where Chembal needs translate and mail to us. It can take time and it's not easy if possible to walk in Humla in winter. Mobile phone can be used even in Yangar, as we announced in a newsletter last summer, but the quality of talks are bad and the cost is very high, so they are used only in cases of extreme emergency as the message that Lhakpa has to go to hospital in Kathmandu.
During the winter, our goat gave birth to two kids, one of which, unfortunately, was dead.
Support Association in the United States
An association to support KMCH is now under construction in the United States. Registration with the authorities, etc., is expected to take some months. Then we can just hope that some money will be gathered. One of the crucial points is whether donations to the association will be free of tax. It is an important factor if you will be able to rise funds in the United States what I have heard from Chembal. It can probably soon be like that in Sweden too – see next section.
Approved recipients, it is a new conception in Sweden. It was until December an unfamiliar concept for us in the Board of KMCH SG. One of our auditors pointed out that some rules for tax deductions for gifts had changed and it would now also include KMCHs operations.
Donors to associations that are approved recipients, can get a tax deduction of 25 % for gifts between 2 000 SEK and at most 6 000 SEK per year. The gift shall be intended for aid for the needy persons or for research purposes. Tax reduction also includes gifts that are intended for people outside Sweden.
To be approved, the associations must meet certain requirements. KMCH SG meets in principle all requirements except that relating to the auditor. This shall be authorized or approved, and be working on an audit firm. To be able to move forward in the process, we have contacted a firm of Auditors who is willing to undertake the mission. The costs to approve and to be an Approved recipients are high for a little association as KMCH SG but, maybe it will be a must in the future. It will also give the Association certain legitimacy.
After considerable internal discussions, we have decided to make a serious effort; especially as we have been promised by a sponsor a contribution which in principle provides cost coverage for the first year. We will try to prepare an application to the tax authorities so it can be submitted immediately after the annual meeting on March 30.
Great gift for Christmas
The day before Christmas Eve a large amount of money was put into our account. It was not entirely unexpected for us because we were alerted but were equally excited anyway. 200 000 SEK to be used for investment and running costs is a fantastic amount for us. We are now calculating the cost of certain investments and prioritize among the most wanted ones. Now, there are opportunities to give all children beds and essentially completing any of the provisional buildings. We will get back to you with information about the investment that is closest in line to be implemented. This big gift is very vulnerable now when we have noted that the gifts from the ordinary donors have decreased in 2013. This is a worrying development that we have to change as fast as possible.
Photo exhibition at Café Mariaberget
In the spring we hope to have a small photo exhibition about Humla and KMCH at Café Mariaberget in Stockholm. It will be about 10 photos, some taken by us in KMCH and some of photographer Thomas Kelly, who lives in Nepal. Kelly has written books about Nepal and Tibet. The date of the exhibition is not yet determined. We will announce it on our website and on facebook as soon as we know.
Membership in KMCH Support Group
We would like to point out that anyone who has paid 100 SEK for the year can become members. It is just to indicate this on the talon. Please remember this for you and relatives and friends. We would like to have a lot of members.
